The Morvan and surroundings

B&B – La Maison Usseau
La Maison Usseau is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan, the green heart of Burgundy only 750 km. from Utrecht. It is a sparsely populated, hilly mountain range in France, which is actually the spur of the Massif Central.
With its surface area of about 200,000 hectares, it is almost 4 times larger than the Veluwe and with a population density of 10 people per square kilometre (Netherlands 420 people per square kilometre), it can rightly be called an oasis of peace. Here you can walk another day without encountering a human being, but beautiful wooded hills, rivers and valleys. In the immediate vicinity: climbing, swimming, golfing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, water sports and tennis.
At 27 km from La Maison Usseau you will find the most famous and touristic Lac des Settons, where you can swim, rent a boat or pedalo and relax or enjoy the restaurants or nature. There is a cycling / walking path of about 16 km around the lake.
And 53 km away from La Maison Usseau is the Lac de Pannecière, the largest lake of the Morvan with an area of 520 hectares. It is one of the 4 cleanest lakes in France. It is much quieter here than at Lac des Settons, the place for quiet fishing.
Besides these 2 reservoirs there are many other lakes in the area.
The Morvan is known for its many music and theatre events, brocante and vide-greniers (flea markets) during the summer period.
The area is home to many historic sites, including Vezelay, Avallon, Autun and Bibracte (an excavation of a Gallic settlement that is now a museum), which are well worth a visit.
In and around the Morvan there are also many castles such as Chateau de Sully at 22 km from La Maison Usseau. Many activities for young and old are organised here.
Beaune is 58 km away from La Maison Usseau. You drive a beautiful route along beautiful picturesque villages. Beaune, city of Art and History, capital of burgundy wines. Surrounded by old city walls, the city is considered the trade centre for burgundy wines.
From Beaune to Santenay, a cycle route winds past vineyards and leads through wine villages with resounding names such as Meursault, Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet. Numerous wine domains, large and small, welcome you for a tasting.
The surroundings have a lot to offer in the culinary field.
In the restaurants you can enjoy the specialties of the Morvan.
Autun is the nearest city (12 km), it was once founded by the Romans just after Gaul was subjugated. There is a lively weekly market on Fridays, outside and in a large hall. On Wednesdays there is a smaller version of this. There are also nice shops and terraces.
Autun has a beautiful cathedral where concerts are given in the evening in summer.
The Roman Theatre is still used every year for a huge spectacle. With hundreds of extras, horse carts and flocks of sheep, the battle between the Gauls and Romans is depicted. Very nice to experience if you are in the neighbourhood at the end of July or the beginning of August.
In addition to the cultural and culinary delights, Autun also has a swimming pool, bowling, golf and a tennis court.
Leaflets with sights and tourist (hiking) maps are available at La Maison Usseau.
